In 1987 The Main: Portrait of a Neighborhood was published and quickly sold out. The critically-acclaimed project celebrated the communities around Montreal’s Boulevard Saint Laurent and contributed to the eventual designation of “The Main” as a Canadian heritage landmark.
In 2017 to celebrate the city’s 375th anniversary, the author was invited to re-imagine the original book. Returning to his former neighborhood, his new book weaves old and new photographs with texts and archives, inviting us on a journey into his creative process to reflect on questions of home, identity, time, memory, and the evolving urban landscape, and asking: in a globalized world where people and cities are in constant movement, what happens to places and memories? Can we go home again?
En 1987, The Main: Portrait of a Neighborhood a été publié et l’édition s’est rapidement épuisée. Ce projet acclamé par la critique célébrait les communautés autour du boulevard Saint-Laurent de Montréal et a contribué à la désignation éventuelle de la rue comme monument du patrimoine canadien.
En 2017, pour célébrer le 375e anniversaire de la ville, l’auteur a été invité à réimaginer le livre original. De retour dans son ancien quartier, son nouveau livre tisse d’anciennes et nouvelles photographies avec des textes et des archives, nous invitant à un voyage dans son processus créatif pour réfléchir aux questions de chez-soi, d’identité, de temps, de mémoire et de l’évolution du paysage urbain, et nous posant la question : dans un monde globalisé où les gens et les villes sont en mouvement constant, qu’advient-il des lieux et des souvenirs ? Pouvons-nous revenir à nouveau chez nous ?

Edward Hillel works at the intersection of art, storytelling and social practice. Producing photographs, installations, public projects, prints, drawings, objects or publications, his projects explore archives, memory, cities in flux, public space and urgent contemporary themes. Exhibited and published internationally, he has been awarded the German Critics Visual Arts Prize, Prix Alain de Rothschild, Spiro Institute Arts Award, Japan-Canada Prize, and the Golden Sheaf Film Award.
Edward Hillel travaille à l'intersection de l'art, du récit et des pratiques sociales. Produisant des photographies, des installations, des projets publics, des estampes, des dessins, des objets ou des publications, ses projets explorent les archives, la mémoire, les villes en mutation, l'espace public et des thèmes contemporains urgents. Exposés et publiés à l'international, ses travaux ont été récompensés par le Prix de la critique allemande pour les arts visuels, le Prix Alain de Rothschild, le Prix des arts du Spiro Institute, le Prix Japon-Canada et le Golden Sheaf Film Award.
